Processing GCP data with Pix4D Software

Introduction: In the previous post I explored the capabilities of the Pix4D Mapper software and how it can be used to better analyze data. In this lab, we took the same set of data and included ground control point data in order to better understand how Pix4D implements GCPs to make GIS more accurate. Ground control points are points with a known location that are used to increase the global accuracy by ensuring the points on the map correspond with an accurate GPS coordinate. Objectives: #1: To import ground control coordinate data into Pix4D #2: To understand how to set the coordinate system of the GCP data #3: To adjust your data in Pix4D using GCP coordinate data #4: To better understand and compare differences between corrected and non-corrected data Methods/Assignment: For this lab, we used the same set of images and data that we used in the previous post. Coordinate Systems and Projections

Introduction: Map projections allow for systematic transformations that allow accurate representations of the Earth's surface on a flat surface. In order to accurately place data on a map, coordinate systems were created in order to give references and ensure accurate information. Since the Earth's shape is not perfectly round, it is an ellipsoid, GIS can be used to collect accurate data. These geographic coordinate systems use a 3D model to name points on the surface of the earth which are then paired with its relative geographic coordinate system. Geographic coordinate systems are then paired with projected coordinate systems in order to turn the Earth's spherical shape to a flat map. In this lab, we used these concepts in ArcGIS Pro alongside the Esri tutorial 'Introduction to Coordinate Systems' to better understand how projections and coordinate systems work. Introduction to Processing Data with Pix4D Software

Introduction: Pix4D mapper is a professional photogrammetry and drone mapping application that allows the user to upload images and analyze them with extreme detail. In this lab, we used sets of data that another class collected with various drones and sensors. Using these images, we went through the basics of Pix4D like how to upload images correctly, how to set coordinate systems, and processing the imagery. In later labs we will dive into aspects like GCPs but for now are focusing on the basics of the software.
